A new student-run organization has recently been introduced at Atlantic High School, giving students a place to connect through faith, leadership, friends, and community. Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a nationwide program that encourages students to strengthen their character and faith while supporting others around them. Although the name includes the word athletes, FCA is open to all students regardless of whether students participate in any form of athletics.
At Atlantic High School, FCA meets regularly to provide a welcoming and positive environment for students. Our FCA group meets on Wednesday mornings from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. There have been many students uninterested in the meetings that early, but the reason these meetings take place then is because our leaders, Mrs. Kelley and Mr. Vargason, must hold the meetings outside of contract hours to follow the strict protocols to host this group.
Meetings often include group discussions, short messages, prayer, and time for students to share their thoughts and experiences. The goal of the group is to help students navigate school life, sports, and personal challenges while staying involved in their faith and values.
Sophomore Claire Comes says, “The group is a very safe space where we get to come together as students and athletes of various sports to grow our faith and trust in God and Jesus. The group already has many students of different denominations present, and I really hope more come! Our morning meetings are a great way to start the day because the messages are always strong and linger in your mind for the rest of the day and week. I believe adding this group will strengthen the unification of this part of our student body. Sometimes it is hard to express faith during the school day, but this gives us a chance to share our faith and learn how to bring Him onto the court, field, etc., with us. Everyone should definitely come give it a try! We even have donuts every Wednesday!”
Because FCA is new to Atlantic High School, the group is still growing, but student interest has steadily increased. Many students have expressed that they enjoy having a space where they can feel supported, encouraged, and accepted. The leaders of FCA hope the group will help students build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills that they can use both in school and in their everyday lives.
As the school year continues, FCA plans to expand its membership and become more involved within the school community. With its focus on faith, encouragement, and unity, Fellowship of Christian Athletes is making a positive start at Atlantic High School and hopes to leave a lasting impact on students for years to come.
