In response to the recent senior prank, Principal Heather McKay has confirmed that a new handbook policy will be added for the coming school year regarding pranks.
According to McKay, “People need to think beyond what may be ‘funny’ in the short term and the long-term aftermath it leaves in its wake.” Currently the AHS handbook outlines punishments for things such as fighting, illegal drugs and alcohol and chronic absenteeism, but no specific clause for pranks. Technological vandalism, such as downloading a virus, is defined with its punishments in the handbook. Physical vandalism is not defined, although “major” and “minor vandalism” are listed as violations of school rules. McKay said “I have not had an opportunity to look into specific policy ideas regarding senior pranks. This was something brought to me some time over the blur of the past few days. I believe Carroll High School is the school I was referred to. ”
School board member Gini Jordan said disciplinary actions are not the school board’s decision. Members of the board were notified of the prank and were asked to “reply separately, otherwise it would have been a ‘meeting’.” When asked if any community member had made a payment to the school to compensate for property damage suffered during the prank, Jordan said “Not to my knowledge.”
