Atlantic’s students have shown great success in the Iowa Poetry Association’s Lyrical Iowa contest. There were 232 entries in the high-school division this year, and only 17 were chosen to be published. Atlantic had four students chosen for publication. Grade 12 Margaret McCurdyś poem “February Snowman,” was selected, as were grade 9 Avery Hahn’s “Be Loud in the Quiet,” grade 9 Cathrine DeBord’s “The Palace.”
Grade 12 Addison Masker with, “Sorry.” Masker won 2nd place overall in the competition. She was awarded $15. DeBord said, “Ms. Berryhill introduced me to the competition and I would do it again. I am very interested in poetry.” Poetry is a good way to use your words to express your thoughts and it is an amazing accomplishment for these AHS students to be published.
