For 98 years, Atlantic High School has been recording its school spirit with the Javelin Yearbook. Each year, the journalism yearbook members try to improve the quality for all students. Looking back on each year, students can enjoy stored memories of the past years.
Dating back to 1928, the yearbook had a brown leather cover with black and white images of students. A little information here and there was used to notify meetings that occurred during the school year. Students wore suits, ties, and simple dresses to school as it was a part of fashion during the time. As years went on, the students began to incorporate more of an engaging yearbook by including silly photos, nicknames, colors, and short captions.
As technology improved, our yearbooks did too. The covers have had different surfaces, transitioning from leather to thick paper, into hard covers like we have today. These covers make the books last much longer and store more memories. Journalism students have realized that the cover is the first thing peers see. Therefore, it has evolved to be more colorful and engaging over time. This increased interest and made students want to continue to purchase the yearbook.
Our AHS journalism department makes the yearbook go an extra mile by using their time to take more photos, design the yearbook pages, and organize the book for students. Pictures include sports, clubs, events, and fun moments from the school year so no memories get lost.
Today, the Atlantic High School yearbook is more than just a book. It’s a way for students to travel back to their high school years and re-experience their shared moments. Even though the designs have changed throughout the years, the purpose is still the same. It shows AHS is better than just an education system, but a place to embrace the fun moments during high school.
