A total of ten individual events and four relays from AHS qualified for the state meet. Only 5,000 out of around 35,000 athletes across Iowa will be competing. The meet will be held from today, May 21 to the 23 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. One of the competitors from Atlantic, Lila Wiederstein, will be running at state for her third time. She said that she is excited for the competition, especially long jump because that is her main event. Wiederstein is currently ranked fourth in Girls 3A Track long jump. Gabrielle Engler, Staff Writer
Gabrielle Engler is a sophomore and second semester journalism student at AHS. Engler’s strong suit is writing. “It’s just fun to do. I like being able to write about things that I also want to learn more about. I get to learn a lot more than I thought I would.” She plans to be active in journalism for the rest of her high school career. “I’m passionate about that kind of stuff.”
Outside of journalism, Engler enjoys running, archery, and softball. She plays instruments such as the bass clarinet, harmonica, and guitar. Engler has been involved in multiple musical and play productions throughout high school. When she graduates she would like to attend a university and participate in their running program, then continue to get a graduate degree to become a lawyer.

Claire Comer, Photographer
Claire Comer joined the AHS journalism staff as a senior after sharing many of her photos with the social media team. Comer’s passion is sports photography, especially baseball. She began her photography journey by taking photos of her friends on her phone. She then bought a used DSLR camera from her neighbor and she has been capturing memories ever since. When she’s not behind the camera, she might be on stage acting, singing, or playing tenor saxophone. She has been a cross-country runner and a varsity soccer player.
