This year’s spring play is Little Women, directed by Musical Director Mark Andersen. The story is set during the Civil War era and follows the lives of the March sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, as they grow up, face challenges, and learn the importance of family and pursuing their dreams. Each sister has a different personality and dream. Throughout the play, the sisters support one another as they learn what it means to grow up. Little Women is about family, love, and finding your own path. The play showcases how the sisters make mistakes, experience heartbreak, and celebrate successes together.
Little Women was first suggested by a student, but it was the least popular production choice in the music department. Andersen recalled the story that solidified his decision to choose this production. “In June, I was cleaning out an old trunk that belonged to my mom, and I found a copy of Little Women.” He has since learned that his mom played the lead role of Jo in the show. “This solidified my choice, as a way to honor my mom.”
Andersen hopes to draw in more community and attendance. “I know that the musical was not in everybody’s sort of area of what they like.” He hopes that students get to have the experience of seeing support not just from parents and siblings, but community members and other students from the school who might want to see the performance.
One of Andersen’s goals with this production is to “provide students with a wide breadth of experience.” He wants students to have the opportunity to be a part of a wide variety of things. “This show has a very different tone than Mean Girls was.” The story has some depth and emotion to it, in ways that more recent productions and plays have not allowed them to do. “I hope students will have an appreciation for the story and literature in general.”
