Shayla Luke

Shayla Luke, Yearbook Editor in Chief

Senior Shayla Luke is one of the lead editors for Yearbook. This means her responsibilities are deciding fonts, colors, writing captions, picking layouts, and browsing over other editors’ pages. Her favorite part of journalism is that it’s student-driven. “The class allows me to do work that I enjoy without being micromanaged, but I can still receive helpful feedback from Ms. Berryhill and my peers,” says Luke.

Luke joined Journalism because she wanted to be more involved with the community. Her favorite story she’s ever written for AHSneedle is “Believe in the Magic” which was about the Christmas season in downtown Atlantic. She said it’s her favorite because she interviewed people other than students and school faculty. “It was difficult for me to interview complete strangers, but I felt that it was important to expand the voices of other people to meet the theme of the story. I also just really like the description and photo I used within it,” said Luke. She’s most proud of being one of the lead editors in Journalism and being the fastest to win a Trojan Head at the end of her sophomore year.

In Luke’s free time, she likes to read and hang out with friends. Her perfect afternoon would be spent with her boyfriend Onesimo and drinking hot cocoa or some type of warm coffee. She also said that Onesimo knows her the best. “He’s been there for both my ups and downs,” said Luke.

Throughout high school, Luke has participated in NHS and worked as the pro-manager of Produce in the Park. Luke helps set up and makes sure everything is running smoothly on Thursday afternoons. She also helps promote Produce in the Park on social media.

Luke enjoys high school because “all the opportunities that it’s brought.” She is thankful that high school allowed her to meet great people, including teachers and friends.
