Spanish three and four students went to one of Atlantic’s local Mexican restaurants, Plaza Azteca, on May 5 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Before going to the restaurant, AHS Spanish teacher, Daniel Vargason, teaches the students that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. It is a day that commemorates Mexico’s victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla. While they were at Plaza Azteca, students were required to have conversations only in Spanish. This way, it was a chance to celebrate and learn at the same time. Senior at AHS, Olivia Olson, said that the trip was “fun and a good experience.”
