The Atlantic boys swim team is gearing up for what they hope will be their strongest season yet. With returning seniors, new faces in the water, and a big goal to send multiple swimmers to state, the team is focused and ready to dive in.
Coach Cody McCreedy said the team’s biggest goal this year is to get more boys qualified for the State Meet. “That’s a big deal for a small school like ours,” he said. “Iowa only has one class in swimming, so our boys have to post one of the top 24 times in the entire state.” He knows the challenge will be tough but believes in his team’s determination.
Senior swimmer Hunter Quist has been putting in the work to make that goal a reality. “I am very excited about this upcoming season,” Quist said. “I’ve been traveling to Des Moines almost every day for club practice this summer.” His personal goals are to qualify for the state and even place on the podium.
Fellow teammate Walker Garry said he’s also feeling confident. “We have a very good team dynamic and some new guys coming out this year,” Walker said. His goals include trying new events, such as the 100-yard breaststroke, and improving his freestyle times. He also said the team’s main challenge is replacing last year’s seniors, but thinks they’re ready to step up.
Coach McCreedy said the District Meet will be the toughest of the season, as it determines who advances to state. “There’s no second chance,” he said. “If your time isn’t fast enough, your season ends that day.” Still, he describes his team as relentless and says they won’t back down from any competition.
The coach also reminds his swimmers to focus on improvement, not just placement. “Win the race against your last time,” McCreedy said. He added that his favorite part of coaching is seeing the boys reach their goals and grow in confidence. “Medals and ribbons are great, but watching them become young men who believe in themselves is better.”
The Atlantic boys swim team knows this season won’t be easy, but they’re ready to work hard and make a splash in the pool.
