Every semester, the high school has an assembly honoring juniors and seniors who have had good grades. This semester, it took place on November 25. The juniors and seniors are chosen based on the number of points they earn. The points work like this: Every A you get in a class at the end of a quarter gives you 2 points, every B gives 1 point, every D takes away 1 point, and an F takes away 2 points. Cs do not give or take points away from the students. If you have over 56 points, you will receive an academic letter and be honored at the assembly. If you have over 90 points, you are given a Trojan head award at graduation, an award for the most studious of students. According to page 6 of the student handbook, people who get a Trojan head award likely have an accumulative GPA of 3.750 or higher.
The academic assembly started in 1985 to honor students who have made an effort in their grades. Just like sports or fine arts, like band or choir, students who have done well are given a letter, and there is a higher reward for doing even better. That shows that the letter system has been a very efficient way of honoring those who have performed well in their academic status.
In an interview with Gina Honke, she stated that 45 people have earned an academic letter. Out of these 45 people, 40 of them are seniors, and 5 are juniors. She said that if someone wants to get a letter as soon as possible, they would have to get straight As. Honke said she was very surprised by the number of people who got a letter, since the number of people has been lower in past years, but she said the average number of juniors who get a letter has been higher, usually around 6 to 10.
All in all, the hard work these students have put into their academics has paid off and is a reward for their achievements. They got to receive these awards in front of their peers.
