Junior Jaci Smith closely follows her music at the Late Winter Concert earlier this year. Smith has been in band and choir all throughout high school and plays the flute.

On Friday, May 7 band and choir members will perform in the State Large Group competition, as their last event of the year. The Chamber Choir will be performing two songs: “No Time” and “Unclouded Day.” Also performing under the direction of Ethan Pruisman will be the Concert Choir and Treble Singers. The band will be performing four songs: Walsenburg Galop composed by Karl L. King, and Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo, composed by Malcolm Arnold. Senior Alicia Pastrana said that the school year coming to an end has been “bittersweet.” “My favorite memory from being in choir was Show Choir Blast sophomore year. It was probably the most fun I’ve had at any choir event,” she said.

Make sure to listen to their music teachers. There is so much you can achieve just by being present in class and giving it your all.

With Atlantic as the host, many southwest Iowa schools will be traveling to perform and compete at AHS. The competition will be composed of 1A and 3A schools, with some schools having multiple groups like Atlantic. Bands will perform in the gym and choirs in the auditorium.

The Trojan’s Concert Band will perform at 9:30 p.m. For the choirs, Chamber will perform at 7:55, Concert at 7:15, and the Treble Singers at 8:35. Pastrana’s advice to underclassmen, as a four year choir member and participant in the band is, “to make sure to listen to their music teachers. There is so much you can achieve just by being present in class and giving it your all.”
