Trojans’ Postseason Rolls On

The postseason began on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the Atlantic girls basketball team. The Trojans played host to the Clarinda Cardinals in the class 3A Region 8 quarterfinal match.

In the regular season, the teams met twice. On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Atlantic was victorious, 78-23. The girls secured the season sweep on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with a 69-34 win. 

Looking for victory number three over Clarinda, the Trojans headed out to the court. Juniors Taylor McCreedy, Maycie Waters, and Haley Rasmussen, as well as seniors Kenzie Waters and Corri Pelzer, started for Atlantic.

Right away after tip-off, the girls grabbed the lead. At the end of one, it was Atlantic up 18-2. The Trojans continued to dominate in the second frame, tacking on an impressive 27 points, while holding Clarinda to just four. The girls went into the locker room with a running clock in place.

Up 45-6, many of the subs got their chance to shine in the second half. The group held the Cardinals to four points in each quarter, cruising to a 58-14 win.

Junior Haley Rasmussen hit 27 points in the contest. All of her points came in the first half. She also led the team in steals with five. As a team, Atlantic was credited with 18 steals, 17 rebounds, nine assists, and three blocks.

With the win, Atlantic moves on to the Regional semifinals. The Trojans will take on Red Oak, who bested Shenandoah 68-55 on Saturday night. The contest will be played in Tiger territory on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
