Atlantic High School offers 20 different athletic activities that the students of AHS can participate in. In the 2018-19 school year, there were 137 boys and 106 girls that participated in athletics at AHS. A total of 395 students attended AHS for the 2018-19 school year. With that being said, over half of the student population at the high school were student athletes.

Athletic Director Andrew Mitchell commented on how the number of student athletes at AHS compares to other schools in the Hawkeye 10. “All schools in the conference are different sizes, depending on the school we fall in line comparably,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell also emphasized that studies have shown students who participate in extracurricular activities perform better in the classroom. “Eligibility and coaches keeping on top of the athletes in school plays a big role,” Mitchell said.

A new interest in the girls’ part of athletic programs offered at Atlantic High School is girls’ wrestling. “We have always had wrestling,” Mitchell said, “wrestling is offered to anyone. Girls wrestling is not being added, girls have just decided to join.”

This program and many others are opportunities for students attending AHS to get involved and become a part of a team.
