When Allison Berryhill’s 8th-period freshman class was reading “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the topic of molasses came up when one of the characters poured it over his food. Many in Berryhill’s class said they did not know what molasses was or even how it tasted. One of the freshmen, Avery Hahn, offered to make some molasses cookies to share with the class. Another student, Chloe Sonntag, then said her grandma, Deb, made molasses cookies and offered to bring some in as well. When the cookies were brought in, not only were the students surprised by the taste, but when asked how they were, Madi Waters said, “Dude, they were so good.” Berryhill says it was a fun and spontaneous way of learning and was more than happy to have a “cookie party.”
