As temperatures begin to plummet, so too do we see the rise of hazards present on both roads and sidewalks. Snow accumulates on the surfaces of these paths, melting and re-freezing to form ice. Slick surfaces reduce traction in tires, leading to more unpredictability on the road. The winter season itself sees a 15% increase in traffic incidents. Similarly, those who walk to their school or jobs are also at risk. Compared to high heat exposure, 63% of recorded deaths in the US between 2006 and 2010 were due to the cold. While most buildings and businesses are well-equipped to deal with rising temperatures, winter is a dangerous threat for those who do not have access to heaters, such as traveling pedestrians.
To beat the cold weather this season, make sure to wear layers of thick clothing to preserve heat when it is needed most. Put on gloves, hats, coats, scarfs, anything that keeps the skin effectively hidden. Shovel drive-ways when needed, and please, take breaks during the process. Shoveling is notorious for causing heart attacks or similar heart-related emergencies due to the excess strain it puts on the body.
Stay safe this winter season.
