A petition has been filed to force a special election to fill a vacancy on the ACSD school board. The vacancy was left by the resignation of Laura McLean due to her moving. The petition was led by community member Stef Gross. Gross said in an earlier interview with the Needle that she chose to file this petition because “We need people to protect and help our kids. They [the board] are not doing that.” According to Iowa law, a petition requires 200 signers for a town of less than 10,000 people. Gross reported that the petition has been signed by 337 people, but it is known that not all signers were registered voters or located within the school district, meaning that the true number of signers is likely lower. If properly filed, the petition will go under review by the County. To see the former candidates for the vacancy, go here. At least one former candidate is confirmed to be running again if the petition is verified.
