If you look at any high school kid and notice they are wearing headphones, nine times out of ten, they are listening to music. Their own personal beats that differ from every person and every style of music.
Every year, a new “life-changing” song or playlist comes out, and it’s all anyone can talk about for months. Eventually, all the buzz about the song wears off, and then a new song or playlist becomes popular once more, and the cycle repeats itself. Students freshmen through seniors, are discovering new music every day that is curving the path of life they are in right now.
Entering high school is a big change, while leaving high school is also a big step. Music doesn’t just depend on age; music depends on how much one song can speak to you. Music is “an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions,” (dictoionary.com).
Over 30% of Atlantic High Schoolers listen to the most current genre of music, while 28% of students prefer 90s music and older, even though everyone is at a different age level.
Pop music in Atlantic High School has a leading percentage of 54% in students who follow pop music trends and listen to songs like “Just Keep Watching” by Tate McRae and “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s. While 37% of high school students listen to Country-based songs, such as “Big Green Tractor” By Jason Aldean, as well as “God’s Country” by Blake Shelton.
Senior Shelton Mualia says he likes all songs by songwriter Drake because he can tell emotional stories at a fast and slow tempo with his music. When Mualia was asked what his favorite song his Freshman year was he said he couldn’t even remember. Realizing how much music has not only grown through the years but also has made him grow into a new person.
Music for everyone is not just a beat playing off a phone or speaker; it’s an expression of emotion and ideas for all high school students within AHS.
