Katie Schmitt comes from a family of four and said, ”We are some of the craziest and funniest people you’ll meet.” She has a brother and a sister, Erin. Her mother has had the most impact on her life. “She helps us get through a lot of hard situations,” Schmitt said. When she was in eighth grade (2013), her father passed away and it was devastating but her mother helped her through it.

Since fourth grade, Schmitt has been part of the Atlantic School District. Before that, she went to school in Walnut. Coming to a new school meant she had to make new friends, and Schmitt met her best friend at recess in fourth grade: fellow senior Bella Mase. Schmitt said Mase came up to her at recess and simply asked to be friends, and they have been ever since.

After the small town of Mapleton, Iowa was struck by a tornado on April 9, 2011, Schmitt started a canned food drive to donate to the victims. “I thought I wanted to be nice,” Schmitt said.

When she was younger, Schmitt wanted to be in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) because she “thought it was so cool,” but now she plans to go to college in Kansas City to become a mortician. She said she became fascinated in mortuary science after her father died.
