Before completing his proudest feat of building his own computer, Gavin Fell-Nichols surrounded himself with lots of computer parts. Fell-Nichols tracked down everything he needed to build a computer on his own after a man was giving away lots of computer parts for free. Fell-Nichols jumped at the opportunity and scooped them up quickly, carrying on with his search to obtain the other items needed to build the computer. Fell-Nichols bought the rest of the items to finish the computer for $40 and quickly got to work.

Inspired by his love for video gaming, Fell-Nichols wanted his own computer that he could play games on. His close friend Ethan Madsen and his dad both had computers, and Fell-Nichols wanted to be able to play video games with them.

“I have a full working computer that only cost me $40,” Fell-Nichols said. Comparing his to his friend’s and dad’s, he found out that their computers cost almost thirteen times the amount his did.

The overall construction of the computer only took half an hour and Fell-Nichols built it all by himself. “It’s really not as complicated as you think it is,” Fell-Nichols said. He taught himself how to construct the machine and he is “pretty happy” with the result.

After high school, Fell-Nichols plans to stay around Atlantic for a few years and work full-time at Hyvee. After that, he predicts he will go into the military and join the Army branch. “Even though it is unfitting for my personality, I think it is a good idea,” he said. Many of Fell-Nichols’ relatives went into the Army branch which is why he says the Army is the right choice for him. Fell-Nichols even has a plan after that: go to college and major in computer science, which is a profession he will be at home in.
