Cooper McDermott relates some of the best times of his life to sporting events and extracurricular activities. One of the reasons for this may be because of his father, Mike. McDermott’s dad had many of the same interests in his prime as his son does, so McDermott grew up cheering at football games, observing calls at baseball games and sitting at the edge of his seat during vigorous hockey games next to his dad, his mom Christa and his younger sister Callie. McDermott’s past experiences may have helped shape his ambition to play college baseball.

McDermott plans to attend Dakota State University in the fall of 2018 to major in elementary education as well as special education. “I chose Dakota State University because I love baseball and it is close to home,” McDermott said. However, baseball hasn’t always been the sport he wanted to pursue in the future. In his early years, McDermott’s mind was set on being a professional hockey player. Alexander Ovechkin, a left wing for the Washington Capitals in the NHL, is a player that stuck out to McDermott and inspired him.

When McDermott is not participating in football, tennis or baseball, he enjoys watching sports and hanging out with his family and friends. “My grandpa has made a huge impact on my life by continuing to teach me many morals and pushing me to be the best that I can be,” McDermott said. After taking a family trip to the state of vast plains and the Rocky Mountains, McDermott said his favorite place to be is in Wyoming.

Going to State in tennis his sophomore and junior years are two of McDermott’s favorite high school memories. McDermott would like to attend college for four years and then teach in a small town around Atlantic, continuing to create many new memories as he grows in his life. He will remember all aspects of his high school years and said, “I will miss playing on Friday nights with the boys.”
