Trey Cappel has always enjoyed working with show calves. In sixth grade, he bought his first calf and placed third in his class at the Iowa State Fair during the same year: an accomplishment he’s most proud of. Cappel now has 12 calves, which he cares for on his family’s acreage located at the edge of town.

Three to four hours of Cappel’s day are spent working with his calves. He “halters them in the morning” before they spend the rest of the day under fans in their stalls. At 8 or 9 p.m., Cappel said he lets the calves into their arena for the night. Cappel has taken calves to the State Fair twice, placing third and fourth in his class the first year and fourth in two events his second year. Total, he has shown between 15 and 20 calves.

When he was younger, Cappel wanted to be a Nascar driver because he “wanted to go fast.” His favorite school memory is soccer practices during sophomore year. Cappel has participated in football as a kicker and a linebacker and soccer as a defensive back. He has also played baseball. After high school, Cappel plans to attend Iowa Western Community College for two years before transferring to a four-year school.
