Today, students across the country, organized by “survivors and allies” of students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, plan to pay their respects to the victims involved in the school shooting by walking out of classes at 10 a.m. The protest is intended to draw attention to gun violence.

According to CNN, the demands of the organizers include

  • Ban assault weapons
  • Require universal background checks before gun sales
  • Pass a gun violence restraining order law that would allow courts to disarm people who display warning signs of violent behavior

Nationwide, the walkout will last for 17 minutes. Each minute represents a student killed at the Parkland, Fla., high school one month ago today. The Atlantic High School administration has provided the track as a safe place to gather for students participating in the peaceful protest.
