On Tuesday, April 18, the girls’ soccer team fell to the Monarchs at Denison, 6-3, but saw success in scoring the team’s first goals of the season.

“We did a much better job of making runs, connecting passes,” Assistant coach Dan Vargason said, commenting on the success of making three goals.

Vargason was pleased to see the team play more confidently. “We scored the first goal of the game, went up one-nothing, and you could see the energy,” he said.

“We got off quite a few shots,” said Vargason, estimating that the team took 20 or more shots.

Vargason said that at the beginning of the second half, “Denison had the opening kickoff, and Danielle Hass stole the ball and dribbled through their entire team and scored a goal.”

“The aggressiveness was there,” he said, “Unfortunately, that kind of woke (Denison) up a little bit because they came back firing.”

“I don’t know if it was a lack of fitness, lack of knowledge, or combination, but we struggled to get back in the midfield, and that hung our defense up,” he said, commenting on the Monarchs’ six goals.

Vargason said the team kept competing and getting shots off. “We fought hard offensively.”

Vargason said the girls are getting more aggressive and are working better together, also noting that the team was playing more confidently with each other than they had in previous games.

The girls fell to Treynor on Friday, April 21 with a score of 7-0.
