Atlantic High School counselor Michelle Huber, along with the help of students, has put together a support group for students in need of a guiding hand.

The group came about when senior Shaylee Brown shared a personal experience she’s had during a discussion in her child development class. Shortly after sharing this experience, other students began confessing to Brown that they too had had similar experiences.

Brown and freshman Bradley Dennis decided that a support group might help their classmates.

Somewhere where they’d “have an escape, somewhere to talk about anything,” Dennis described it.

The group will mainly focus on dealing with different types of stress, and talking about life experiences that have shaped how their lives are going.

“Our real focus is resiliency – how you’ve moved forward from hard times,” Huber said.

This is the first group Huber has initiated in Atlantic. Any student that feels they’d like to attend this group may contact Huber and pick up a permission slip for their parents to sign allowing them to participate.

The first session should be held sometime this week at the high school. The time and place will be announced to those involved.
