And homecoming week has started! Atlantic high school’s first homecoming event concluded Tuesday, Sept. 6 after fourth period with the sophomores and juniors beating the seniors and freshmen in the annual dodgeball competition. History teacher Trace Peterson served as the announcer for the annual dodgeball tournament, and the line judges were Señor Dan Vargason and new health/gym teacher Tucker Weber.
The first game to kick off dodgeball was between the sophomores and seniors. After the rules were gone over, athletes were allowed to run for the balls, but were required to retreat back behind the white line. The sophomores made the first hit, sending senior Lexi Freund to the sidelines. After this move, the seniors ganged up on sophomore Alyssa Ginther and succeeded in getting her out.
“(Karsyn) Rush is unamused with the heat thrown (at her),” said Peterson. The first round was three on three at the final point. Sophomores Alexis Derby, Emma Joyce and Rush vs. seniors Sarah Fixmer, Bailey Schildberg and Trinity Zynda. The sophomores came out with the win.
During the second round, Catherine Leonard made the first victory for the senior team by catching Rush’s ball. All the while, the crowds cheered for senior Madelyn Kickland as she sprinted after a ball to the white line on the opposing team, but missed the catch. The class of 2017 were the victorious winners this round.
The third and final round of dodgeball would break the tie between the sophomores and seniors. Seniors came in strong for this round and attacked the sophomores, but failed to get any of the players out. Lexi Freund was the last senior on the court and was bombarded by the other team, resulting in the sophomores defeating the seniors overall. The sophomores will face off against the juniors on Thursday.
