The Atlantic JV football team has now been changed to a “freshman-sophomore” team due to low numbers on the football team. Atlantic has “decided to remove the JV team,” according to athletic director Matt Alexander.

Alexander said that he met with the other AD’s in the district, and that the choice was between cutting the freshman or the JV team. They came to the conclusion that it would be best to cut the JV team over the freshman team.

Junior Brendan Holmes said, “It gives the freshmen a better competition.” He also said that most of the players “like the change.”

Some players may be getting more or less playing time due to this change. Junior Kyle Nelson said, “It doesn’t affect me, but it affects other player’s playing time.”

Senior Brody Peterson said the change became official “a week after the first game,” on Aug. 29.

Many football players think there will be a JV team in the future.  Nelson said, “I’m sure it’s just this year because of the numbers.”

The JV team affects not only the rest of the football team, but also the parents of the community. Alexander said that there was some disappointment, but in the end they realized that it was for the best.

The JV team being cut had people wondering if the football team would go down a class. Alexander said that the classification for extracurricular activities is counted by the enrollment of the school, not by the size of the team.
