During third period on Tuesday, Nov. 18, there was an unexpected fire alarm.  Industrial technology teacher Derek Bair’s third period metal processes class was putting crushed pieces of a radiator into a foundry (which melts metal) when it caught on fire and caused lots of smoke. This caused the smoke detectors to go off around the whole school building.

Bair said, “It was smoke, oil, and other flammables on or in the aluminum. We assumed it was clean enough to use, but it wasn’t. I was aware it could happen, and we were aware of a smoke detector in the room, which will be replaced with a heat detector.”

Because of this alarm, some classes had to go outside in the cold. Athletic director Matt Alexander said, “I think we caught students before they went outside. There may have been a couple classes outside for two to three minutes.”

Sophomore Carter Cox thought it was “dumb because we had to go outside.”

Sophomore Drake Roller said, “I thought it was good because we learned the procedures of a fire alarm.”
