At the Atlantic Community School board meeting on Monday night, Kristy Pellet was nominated as president and Mary Beth Fast was elected secretary and treasurer. The board also discussed topics including The Scary Guy and the possibility of a plumbing class being offered in the future, as well as (approved) both the 2016 Costa Rica Spanish club trip and next year’s FFA National convention trip.

During the superintendent’s report, Dr. Mike Amstein elaborated on both his opinion of The Scary Guy and the possibility of the school offering a plumbing class in the future. Amstein said he thought The Scary Guy had been “well received,” and stated that the board would continue to “look at what impact it’s (The Scary Guy program) had.” Amstein also said there is progress being made with the possibility of a plumbing class at AHS. Amstein says he hopes to offer the class for juniors and seniors. The class would be offered 8th period of the school day, and he hopes to have at least 10 or 12 students participate in the program. Amstein explained that the program will only be put in place if “we are successful with our grant.”

During the principal’s report, football at AHS was briefly discussed, as well as high schooler’s truancy issues. In response to the truancy issues of many students, principal Heather McKay said, “It’s the follow up that is the missing component.” McKay also said that when a truant student is assigned an advocate “sometimes it’s better to pair a student up with a seminar adviser and sometimes it’s better to pair them up with someone who does not have them in the classroom.”

The food service director DeeAnn Schreiner was present during the board meeting and discussed the possibility of having a coffee and smoothie bar for breakfast at the high school. Schreiner said, “Having a coffee or smoothie bar might give students more options.”
