Atlantic High School meets the Hunger Games

By Kelsey Hamilton

Atlantic High School Speech Team advanced from District to State competition with their entry in the new Short Film category. According to junior Tetta Askeland, a small project turned into a fun task. Askeland said that she and senior Caroline Trewett started the project as a drama semester exam.  It then carried on to second semester.  Trewet and Askeland decided they wanted to enter their video in Iowa’s High School Speech Association Large Group Contest. Fifteen people from the school were cast in clips of the short film.

Askeland and Trewet decided the roles for the film by who would fit the parts. Askeland said that she is very excited and she feels that with the changes they will make before the state competition will improve their film. “I think we will do well, and we can only hope for the best.” She also mentioned that speech coach Matt Smith is very excited about it and that makes her even more pumped about it.

In addition to coaching speech, Smith is the teacher of Drama and Advanced Speech. Smith said that Askeland and Trewet worked very hard and long on it every chance they had. “I’ve always wanted to do a student directed film, because it teaches them how to acually do something hands on.” he mentioned that he knew that editing needs to be done, and some of the sound needs to change.

Landon Stark casted in the short film said that he enjoyed being part of it. “I don’t know how the film will do at state but I feel like it was a good experience.” Everyone is very excited to see how this film will do!
