Podcasters Kate Nichols and Ella Meyer use new equipment purchased by the ACSD Foundation. After attending Media Now journalism camp at Drake University last summer, Nichols and Meyer have plans to take AHS podcasting into a new era.
Welcome to season 4 of The Point with new hosts Ella Meyer and Kate Nichols! Music “The Wall” by Atlantic graduate Evan Brummer.
AHS sophomore Ella Meyer started journalism this year. She has written Katie Birge’s Editor bio and Kylie Pulido's Editor bio and the teachers of AHS hobbies. In journalism, she has also taken many pictures. Other than being involved in journalism, she is in speech, and choir and was in the musical this year. Something Meyer is excited about this school year is the winter formal. “It’s just so fun to be there with everyone, and to be dancing.” Outside of school, Meyer likes to hang out with friends and family. At home, she lives with her mom Julie, her dad Aaron, and her sister Anna. She also has a dog, Sadie Mae. “I love her so much, she is just so cute with her big ears.” Her first memory was waking up on her fifth birthday. “I was just like I can like see.”

Kate Nichols´ favorite thing to do in journalism is to take pictures and write stories. In journalism, Nichols´ enjoyed taking pictures of the musical Spongebob. She really enjoyed being behind the scenes, seeing how everything worked, and how it was all put together. Nichols´s favorite story that she got to write in journalism is her story on the pink tax because she thought she wrote it "really well," and learned a lot of information about the subject. It turned out really well. Also, Nichols is involved in speech and choir. She likes to paint, read, and bake in her free time. She also has an older sister, a dog, and two cats. Her dog's name is Mia and her cat's names are Smokey and Freddy. Nichols is 16 and is a sophomore at Atlantic High School, her favorite subjects in school are Middle World History and English. Nichols likes Middle World History because she likes to learn about the past and old things. She likes English because she's always been good at it and likes to read and write.

Journalism advisor and English teacher Allison Berryhill has been teaching at Atlantic High School for 18 years, teaching English 1 and all branches of Journalism, including broadcasting, yearbook, and newspaper. “I love the fact that kids can get up and move around and they don’t have to stay in their seats,” Berryhill said regarding her classes. “Teaching is just so much fun. It’s always different, kids are so funny. I’ve taught just about anything and each class is so interesting.” In her free time, Berryhill reads and writes. “This won’t surprise you, I like to write poetry and essays.” Berryhill can also be found running on gravel roads or local trails in the spring and summer. “When the weather gets cold, I kind of peter out.” Something unusual Berryhill does in her free time is playing the accordion “five times a week with my mother-in-law,” who is 92 years old. Berryhill enjoys working in Atlantic because “It’s easy to have good relationships with the kids because there’re fewer of them.” She doesn’t have current plans to retire. “I still look forward to coming to school every day,” she said, and “at some point, I will retire or die.”
