In the bathrooms and locker rooms, there are posters advising students to not use their phones.

Rules regarding cell phone usage can vary from school to school. Some schools allow phones to be used in between classes, during class when there is no work for the students to do, and also at lunch. However, other schools don’t allow phones to be used at all throughout the day. According to the article “Cell Phones in School,” there was a time in which students could not have their phone at school at all, but times have changed and cell phones are now welcome in most schools. It just depends on when and how they use them.

At Atlantic High School, signs are posted outside of the bathrooms with pictures showing that the bathroom is a no phone zone. The student handbook at AHS states, “Cell phone use in restroom areas and locker rooms is prohibited at ALL times.” It also states there are consequences for using a cell phone in the bathroom. For example, after the third offense, the phone is taken, returned back to the parent, and the student should receive one day of in-school suspension. Although these are the rules at AHS, there is no bathroom monitor at the school and of 20 students asked if they’ve ever gotten their phone taken away in the bathroom, all of them said no.
