Getting to Know the Class of 2018: John McConkey
Senior Spotlight featuring John McConkey
May 9, 2018
John McConkey was a broadcasting editor in journalism during his senior year. “I basically make cool videos with Chase (McLaren),” McConkey said. His favorite project was “the game show video.” In this video, three contestants were given hints about a person in the high school and had to guess who they were. McConkey likes being able to make something everyone sees and enjoys.
A calm and relaxing place that McConkey likes to go is his basement, “chillin’ with the boys and playing Madden or 2k.” One talent he said he would like to be able to have without any effort is playing the guitar.
Besides journalism, McConkey has also participated in football, wrestling, track and National Honors Society. He describes himself as a determined individual and this may be what helped lead him to become the 2018 2A State Champion in wrestling. McConkey also enjoys making people laugh and said he’s “good for yuks.” The ability to make people laugh is something McConkey said he would never change.
Wrestling coach Tim Duff and football coach Mike McDermott are two people McConkey said he looks up. According to McConkey, they are “outstanding” individuals and he also would never give away his Trojan pride, even as he moves on in his life. After high school, McConkey is going to study education at the University of Northern Iowa where he will also wrestle as a Panther.
