Senior Spotlight featuring Duke Zellmer

Heart is more important than height: a person could be the biggest in the room, but be beaten by someone who is not at the same skill level or size because working hard and believing is the only way to succeed.
This was how Duke Zellmer felt during his sophomore year of football when the player typically ahead of him went down with an injury during a game. When coach called his name, Zeller said the only feeling he had was nervousness. Even though he went into the game late, he was rewarded with the Player of the Game recognition afterward. As Zellmer played his last season, he continued to feel as if he was the underdog but that didn’t stop him from making crucial plays for the defense.
Zellmer’s inspiration throughout his life and high school activities and curriculum have been his parents, who have made him into an “exceptional human.” Football has also helped him believe he can do whatever he puts his mind to. One of Zellmer’s most relaxing vacations would be a casual time down at the Amelia Islands in Florida. When he’s not doing chores or at school, Zellmer likes to lift, show his cattle or just hang with his friends.
Zellmer’s greatest life accomplishment occurred this past year. He was awarded the “Grand Champion Market Heifer” and Reserve for his steer. Zellmer said he wouldn’t trade that moment for anything. His senior year Homecoming also stood out to him because it was the game that the Trojans beat Creston in overtime to get their first Homecoming win since 2012. It was also the first time Atlantic beat Creston since 2008.
When Zellmer was younger, he wanted to tend to his cattle and drive the tractor on his family’s farm. Now he plans to attend college to major in Ag Technology and hopes to become a Design Technician.
