Getting to Know the Class of 2018: Michael Mohr

Senior Spotlight featuring Michael Mohr

Senior Michael Mohr has loved reading ever since he was a young boy. It all started after reading Harry Potter in fourth grade at Denison Elementary. “I’m most proud of (it) because at the time, there was something called reading counts and I was the number one in the school. I beat the old record by almost 100 points.” Now as a senior, his favorite books are still those in the Harry Potter series. Next time you think about reading Harry Potter, talk to senior Michael Mohr and maybe you will learn something you didn’t know.

Mohr moved to Atlantic at the beginning of his senior year from the Denison school district, where he attended from fourth to 11th grade. The biggest moment of his life was when he moved to Atlantic without the rest of his family. His parents Lynette and Gaylen and sister Mallory still reside in Denison. “I asked myself, ‘How am I going to pay for rent?’ So it motivated me to get a job,” Mohr said.

Playing video games is Mohr’s favorite activity, and the game he likes most is Skyrim because it’s “interesting.” While at Denison, he was a member of the Denison trap team. His favorite school memory was “the time where blue team, of our trap team, took 5th at State,” because his best friend was on the team.

The person who has had the biggest impact on him is his great uncle, who battled with cancer. “He taught me to persevere, to never give up,” Mohr said. Mohr’s favorite place to relax or lounge is “the library, lots of books to read.”

Mohr’s future plans are to attend Iowa Western Community College for network security and software design. “I want to stop all these cyber attacks that are going on,” Mohr said.
