Eight Trojans will compete for a chance at State after finishing in the top two at Saturday’s IHSAA 2A Sectional 8 wrestling tournament. AHS hosted the six-team tournament which included Harlan, Kuemper Catholic, Red Oak, Shenandoah, and Southwest Iowa.

Atlantic-Cam took the sectional title with 230 points, 52 points ahead of second-place Red Oak with a total of 178. Harlan took third, Shenandoah fourth, Kuemper Catholic fifth, and Southwest Iowa sixth at 62 points.

The Trojans had six wrestlers competing to be sectional champions and four came out on top: senior Kole Hansen (126), junior Chase McLaren (132), junior Connor Pellett (160) and senior John McConkey (285). Runners-up included freshman Steele McLaren (120) and senior Colton Mudd (145).

Freshman Payton Fewson earned his runner-up finish at 152 in a wrestle-back against junior Zach Daniel of Kuemper Catholic, beating him by one point with a score of 8-7. Junior Kenny Jimerson also had a wrestle-back at 182 but fell to Thomas Bentley of Red Oak, finishing third.

Sophomore Aybren Moore was the 113-pound “champ” of the tournament. Moore had a bracket full of byes, meaning there were no other wrestlers in his weight class. This guaranteed him a spot at districts without any real matches taking place.

Both C. McLaren and McConkey also earned 150 career wins at this tournament.

Atlantic-CAM will travel to Harlan for districts on Saturday, Feb. 10.
