Chefs Visit AHS

Two chefs from Prairie Meadows in Des Moines, Iowa will be visiting the culinary program on Oct. 11.

Chefs Patricia Weidner and Agustin Quintana are coming to give the students taking prostart expertise guidelines and tips in the culinary field.

The person behind all of this is the culinary teacher Meryl Hopper who decided to give the students a chance to meet some actual chefs who are willing to help them grasp what to expect in the real world.

“It’s something I’ve thought of since we don’t have a chef mentor to come in and talk with the kids,” said Hopper.

Chefs Weidner and Quintana are going to give them an interactive lesson about sauces. They are going to cover the mother sauces and the variation of the five main sauces where all other different ones come from. In the lesson, they will be creating a fresh roja salsa and a DeBurgo sauce.

Hopper hopes to have these interactive lessons with different chefs at least once a month. It is hard to find chefs that are willing to drive all the way here, because Atlantic doesn’t have any professional chefs. She hopes to get another chef at the end of Oct. and sometime in Dec.
