Trojan Volleyball Strengthens Their Record
August 30, 2016
On Saturday the Atlantic Trojan volleyball team traveled west to Avoca to participate in a tournament consisting of eight teams. AHSTW hosted the tournament while several teams from southwest Iowa traveled to compete including CAM, Clarinda, Council Bluffs, Thomas Jefferson, Denison-Schleswig, Riverside, Oakland, Sidney and last but not least Atlantic.
Atlantic competed head-to-head with four different teams which include in order, CAM, Denison-Schleswig, Riverside, Oakland and AHSTW. After beginning their season 2-0, the Trojans dropped 3 of their next four match-ups within the tournament, managing to only beat Riverside, Oakland.
The Trojans were defeated 1-2 by the CAM Cougars to begin their action for the weekend. Atlantic defeated the Cougars in their first game 21-17 but narrowly lost their second and third with the scores of 21-16 and 15-13.
The Trojans then were matched up against the Monarchs of Denison-Schleswig where Atlantic defeated the Monarchs 21-19 before dropping the next two games 21-11 and 15-11 respectively.
Atlantic played Riverside in their third set of competition defeating the team from Oakland in short order outscoring 21-9 and 21-10, before battling the host of the tournament AHSTW to round out the weekend losing their first and third games 21-15 and 15-11 while managing to defeat the Vikings in their second game 21-12.
Head coach Emma Walker says that the team focused more on just competing and winning rather than just winning in itself. “I really feel like we have potential to beat records that we haven’t in a long time,” Walker said. Regarding what she attributes the team’s recent success to, Walker stated, “Definitely the hard work the girls put in this winter and summer. Having positive attitudes and being more like sisters out on the court.”
The Trojan volleyball team is set to take on the Glenwood Rams on Thursday later this week. Be sure to attend and cheer on the Trojans!
