AHS show choirs were fired up on Saturday when they performed their show “Don’t mess with fire!” at their final competition of the season. The Premiere and Diversity show choirs went to Emmetsburg, almost three hours northeast of Atlantic, for the March 6 competition with five other 3A schools plus many more in other divisions. Going to this show was a big event for the Diversity choir because they normally only participate in one competition a year, but this was their second for this season.

Going into Saturday, choir director Jennifer Gaesser said that the biggest competition will be Le Mars and Carroll. Carroll ended up placing first and Le Mars placed second. Atlantic was awarded a trophy for 4th place.

Gaesser said her students “have put in lots of time and effort and have been working hard all season.”

During the show Premiere had three soloists: Will Weppler, Max Elwood and  Nicole Eilts. There is also a duet with Josh McLean and Lydia Joseph. Gaesser said this group of soloists is the best group she’s had so far.

A junior in the premiere show choir Alexis Brockman was prepared to face big schools with some tough competition. Brockman said she feels the soloists are really strong.

The great moves Diversity does that you see on stage were choreographed by Kamerin Churchman from New York, and Premier’s amazing moves were choreographed by Ben and Melissa Ecklund.

A sophomore in the Diversity choir Jacey Eyanson was concerned that the choir would be missing some of their strong male singers who were at State archery. She said the shows are repetitive but they are fun.

After the competition Gaesser said she was very impressed by the choirs’ performances and overjoyed with the scores. She was also very proud of the soloists and the duet. She also said overall it was a great day. Diversity choir scored almost a 400, which is one of the highest Diversity score since Gaesser has been in the Atlantic choir program.

At this competition there were 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools from all over. To go to this competition all the school has to do is register how many students you are bringing and pay your fee.

If you’ve missed out on seeing their performance, the choirs will perform again at Show Choir Blast here at the high school on April 23.
