AHS Guidance Counselor Named Educator of the Year

Madeline Nelson

Recently, AHS Guidance Counselor Michelle Huber was named Educator of the Year and presented an award.  The award was presented on Jan. 23 at the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce dinner.  AHS Principal Heather McKay was asked to present the award to Huber and give a short speech at the dinner.  Huber did not expect the award as McKay had told her the dinner was to discuss the Silver Cord Program.  “That didn’t happen.” Huber said. “I was very very very surprised.”

Certain criteria is looked upon when choosing the best nominee for the award. Atlantic Chamber of Commerce Programs Director Cate Christensen said they look at educators that are “dedicated, inspiring, and making a difference within the lives of the youth within the schools of the Atlantic Area.”

In her speech prior to presenting the award, McKay called Huber an “important piece” to both her fellow educators as well as her students who seek guidance daily.  Huber said, “I am very humbled, it’s an honor. I’m still so new but i’ve already learned so much.”

The Chamber dinner and awards committee looks over all the nomination forms and chooses the winner. When choosing, they look at who best fits the criteria, people that have many nomination forms, or people that stand out as to why they should be chosen.
Congratulations to Mrs. Huber and thank you for all the work you do at AHS!
