N. Podhajsky Advances to State Tournament

Senior Nick Podhajsky won all three of his matches, and advanced to the state tournament. This is Podhajsky's first year making it to state.

Last Friday, May 15, the boys tennis team traveled to Carroll to play at their first districts tournament of the year. All of the boys placed, and went on to sub-state.

In singles, senior Nick Podhajsky won his first 2 matches in sets 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2. After winning these matches Podhajsky played in the championship match against Denison’s Matt Moran. This match determined whether Podhajsky would go as the #1 or #2 player at the state tournament. Podhajsky won his first set 7-6 in a 4 point tie-break, and won his second set 6-2, sending Podhajsky to state as the #1 player.

Freshman Grant Podhajsky also played singles. (Grant) Podhajsky won his first 2 matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2. In his third match (Grant) Podhajsky fell to Denison’s Matt Moran 4-6, 3-6. (Grant) Podhajsky then played Ballard’s Devin Wargo to go to state as the alternate. (Grant) Podhajsky defeated Wargo 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, seniors Ben Parker and Kyle Krueger won their first match 6-4, 7-5, but lost their second match 5-7, 1-6. Freshmen Cooper McDermott and Luke Hohenberger also won their first match 6-4, 7-5, but lost their second match 4-6, 3-6.

As a team, the boys advanced to sub-state. They played Kuemper on Monday, May 18, and defeated the Knights 5-4, the Trojans will now play one more sub-state game in order to play at the state tournament.
