A New Era of Atlantic Girls Basketball

The 2014-15 girls basketball season is seeing many new changes from last year’s season. Head coach Casey Pelzer resigned last year after coaching for numerous years, leaving the position open for new head coach Kelly Juhl.

Juhl has coached 5 years for Iowa boys basketball from 1999-2004, and finished 2nd in the state in 2002. He also coached girls basketball for 9 years in Deluth, Georgia, and finished 4th in the state in 2008. Juhl also coached the 2013 girls basketball season at E-EHK.

The Trojans previous records are not as successful as Juhl would like them to be. What Juhl says he wants to improve on the most this year is the overall product that the girls put onto the court every single night. He says his goals for the season are “to improve each day being together as a team.”

Up until a couple years ago, Atlantic’s girls teams were called the Trojanns and the boys teams were called the Trojans. This was recently changed so that all of the sporting teams could be called the Trojans. The girls basketball team has recently ordered new uniforms and warm-ups for the 2014-15 season since it is their turn for new jerseys, and also because some of the apparel has the name Trojanns on it instead of Trojans. “Also, I want to usher in a new era of Atlantic girls basketball,” said Juhl.

During the summer, Juhl met the girls and worked with them during open gyms. Juhl said he has been ready for the season to start ever since May 1, when he met the girls, and is very excited for the season. “I am most excited for working with the girls and taking on the challenges and excitements of a head coaching position.”

In the end, Juhl hopes to begin a new attitude towards Atlantic girls basketball and improve the overall leadership he sees on and off of the court.
