Trojan Soccer loses in shootout

The Atlantic Trojan soccer team hosted the Lewis Central Titans in their second game of the season on Tuesday, April 5.  The Trojans were defeated 3-1 in a shootout. With the loss the Trojans fell to 1-1 on the season.

The two teams were tied at 2 after two 45-minute halves and two 10 minute overtimes.

According to junior Derek Von Seggern, the Trojans came out flat and gave up two quick goals to the Titans.  Von Seggern answered with a goal of his own to cut the Lewis Central lead to only one going into the halftime break.

At the midway point of the second half, the Trojans narrowly escaped falling victim of a third Titan goal.  Lewis Central had intially scored their third goal of game with 26:37 remaining in the game, but the goal was negated.

The Trojans got a goal of their own at with 15:10 remaining in the second half, to tie the game at 2.

Junior Francesco Castellani missed a header by less than a foot with less than five minutes remaining .

Neither team scored during the remainder of regulation, sending the game to a sudden-death overtime.

During the first overtime neither team was able to gain advantage.  Castellani and senior Dylan Christensen were both given yellow cards during the first overtime.

Lewis Central was accessed 3 yellow cards, a red card, and their assistant coach was ejected during Tuesday’s game.

The two teams ended the first overtime deadlocked at 2, sending the game to a second overtime.

The Trojans had a few chances in the second overtime, but neither team was able to score sending the game to a shootout.

During the shootout, both teams picked five players to go one-on-one against the opposing teams’ goalie.  The Trojans had Castellani shoot first, he missed.

The Titans’ first shooter got his shot past senior goalkeeper Brad Schwenke.  The Trojans countered with Von Seggern’s second goal of the game to tie the shootout 1-1.

The Titans’ second and third shooters were able to shoot past Schwenke.  Senior Dan Thomsen missed the Trojans third attempt.  The Trojans were down 3-1 with only two Trojan shooters remaining.  Sophomore Harrison Hoegh had to make the next shot for the Trojans, in order to force the Titans to shoot again.

Hoegh’s shot was deflected away by the Lewis Central net master.

The Trojans lost the shootout 3-1.

The Trojans travel to Neola Thursday night to play Tri-Center.
