Purpose

In short, this is a prepared plan to counter an active shooter in or around the school building. This is also used in the workforce, at hospitals, places of worship, and for law enforcement. This was created after the Columbine school shooting in Colorado by a law enforcement officer, Greg Crane.

Why It Should be Taken Seriously

A threat was made against the Atlantic Community School District on September 8, 2024. The threat on social media was made against two of the four ACSD buildings.

After investigation, it was deemed not credible by the Atlantic Police Department. However, due to the disruption caused to the school district as a whole, the 12-year-old who posted the online threat has since been taken into custody.

Due to the intensity of the threat, the entirety of the Atlantic Community School District will have a "heightened presence" of police within the different buildings this week.

About the Program

The Alice training program has two different classes, an online portion and an in-person session. The online portion is a live three-hour Zoom. Students and teachers learn the what and why of the ALICE program. They talk about the anogram, how to perform, and why it is effective. The in-person session is led by a National Trainer. This includes practice and examples for how to successfully perform hands-on scenarios. Students are able to ask questions and participate in acting out these scenarios. These classes were designed to create confidence in people to react responsibly in case of an emergency. For students, they emphasize minimizing harm with these classes, so the lessons are altered to be age-appropriate for K-12. The purpose of equipping students and teachers with this knowledge is to give them the best chance at surviving an emergency.

This photo is an example of students performing the L of the ALICE Training: Lockdown. They have successfully locked the door and begun stacking desks to barricade it. This will make it more difficult for an intruder to break in and cause harm. This could give students more time to get to safety or keep the intruder out.
