You might know Chloé Newbury as Senior Class Vice President, Student Council Secretary or a journalism editor, but there is more to her than that. Newbury has had a passion for cars since she was a little girl.

Her love of cars began when her mom met her dad at a car show. “She saw my dad with a nice car and went over to talk to him,” Newbury said. From there, Newbury has attended car shows since she was 5 months old, including the Good Guys car show every year since she was born. Newbury plans to continue this tradition for years to come.

During the summer of 2017, Newbury attended the Hot Rod Power Tour. The tour started in Kansas City at the Arrowhead Stadium and each day thousands of people drove their cars to a new town in the Midwest for a car show. Newbury said she was even given the opportunity to drive and lead a group of cars for almost 200 miles. “Traveling from town to town on the power tour was such a marvelous experience because you’re with thousands of other cool cars just driving on scenic roads, with a line that goes on for miles,” Newbury said.

Besides enjoying cars, Newbury loves reading and hanging out with her dogs Phoenix, Simon and Magnum. She has been employed at the Heritage House for two years and enjoys weightlifting to work out. Her favorite place to relax is either “a nice shady spot outside with my dogs and good book” or in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Throughout high school, Newbury has been involved in soccer, basketball managing, student council, junior and senior class vice president and journalism. Her favorite memory was homecoming her senior year. “Being on court with all my friends was really fun. We also won the football game for the first time in five years and it was cool to be a part of that,” Newbury said. She also described the dance as “p-litty.”

A moment she is proud of would be lettering in journalism and receiving the Quill and Scroll honor. Her biggest moment in life was creating the senior magazine because “it pushed me into my career of journalism and it gave me an inside view of what it will be like to be an editor in the outside world.”

As a young child, Newbury wanted to become a teacher because her great-grandmother was one. “My grandma and mom talked highly of her so I wanted to be like her,” Newbury said. Now as a young adult, Newbury has decided she would like to be an editor. She will be attending Drake University to major in journalism. She chose journalism because she loves editing and feels like that is what she’s “supposed to do.” During college, Newbury wants to live in New York for a year and be “well traveled.”
