Trojan Basketball Takes Down #1 Nebraska Team
January 27, 2017
Last night, Jan. 26, the Trojan basketball team traveled to Abraham Lincoln to take on the Elmwood Murdock Knights from Nebraska.
The Knights are the number one ranked class C2 team in Nebraska. Prior to last night, the Nebraska team had only lost four games in three years.
Coming into the game, the team knew how tough of an opponent they were about to play.
In the first quarter the Trojans found themselves trailing up until the end, finishing the first eight minutes down 14-16.
By halftime, the Trojans kept the Knights’ lead to only a few points, going into the locker room down 29-31.
The Trojans had a strong third quarter taking the lead early on, and maintaining it, going into the fourth 44-36.
By the end of the fourth, the Trojan team had defeated the Knights 63-56, advancing their record to 10-4.
Leading scorers of the night were junior Austin Alexander with 19 points, senior Garrett Franken with 18, and junior Scott Leonard with 15.
Head coach Alan Jenkins said, “We were able to adjust as the game went along. I felt like we pushed through a slow start to play some very solid basketball in the 2nd half. I like how this team is competing right now. Our 1-3-1 defense was a highlight of the game. It pushed them out of offensive sync, and allowed us to push a faster tempo.”
The Trojans next game is tonight, Jan. 27, at home against the Red Oak Tigers.
Varsity tip-off is at 7:30.
