Trojans Suffer Second Loss of the Season

On Friday, Sept. 9, the Trojan football team had their 2016 homecoming game against the Denison Monarchs. The Trojans lost the heartbreaker 17-20 in overtime.

During the first half the Trojans were trailing 0-7, but by the second half the team came back and was able to tie the game.

The Monarchs scored again early in the third leading 14-0.

Soon after, junior Grant Podhajsky recovered a Monarch fumble near the Trojan end zone, and scored closing the Denison lead to just one touchdown, 7-14.

In the fourth quarter senior Garrett Franken scored on a 72 yard touchdown pass tieing the game 14-14.

Neither team was able to score before the clock ran out which put the game into overtime.

The Trojans got the first overtime possession with senior Eric Weiser scoring 3 on a field goal kick, leading the Monarchs for the first time of the game, 17-14.

Denison got the next possession and was able to barely push through the Trojan defense, scoring a touchdown and winning the game 20-17.

Head coach Mike McDermott said, “I thought we played tremendous team defense. Special teams was solid again, offense at times put it together when we needed it to. One of our goals Friday was to create big plays. We created big plays just not enough of them.”

The Trojans next game is this Friday in Winterset, kickoff is at 7.
