Seniors Lydia Joseph and Ryan Hawkins were chosen to represent Atlantic High School for  the Hawkeye 10 Conference All-Academic and Character Awards. “Selection to this All-Conference Team was based on academics, leadership, character and school/community service,” a recent press release stated.

The awards given to the two recipients of Atlantic High School were the All-Academic Award to Joseph and the Character Award to Hawkins. Criteria for the All-Academic honor included a minimum ACT composite of 29. The Six Pillars of Character were a factor for the Character Award. The six pillars are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

Lydia Joseph was among the 22 seniors in the Hawkeye 10  given the All Academic Award. Joseph’s plans are to study at Capernwray College in England and then to attend college in the fields of music and psychology.

Winners of the All-Academic Award are selected by a committee consisting of the president, vice president, and secretary of the Hawkeye 10 Conference Board of Control, in addition to a non-school person selected by the president.

Over 1,400 seniors attend the Hawkeye 10 conference schools. Being chosen for the All-Academic Award is the highest honor that is given by the Board of Control. The schools participating are located in Atlantic, Clarinda, Creston, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood, Harlan, Kuemper Catholic, Lewis Central of Council Bluffs, Red Oak, Saint Albert, and Shenandoah.

Each Hawkeye 10 Conference school selects its own recipient for the Character Award. Hawkins will be “attending Wayne State University to study Business Administration and play basketball.”
