DAwG Week to Focus on Digital Safety
Students design logos to be promoted for DAwG week
March 31, 2016
When you get on the internet do you think about what others are thinking when you post something? Probably not, have you ever thought that it could really hurt someone and could change the way that person looks at life. There is a lot of scary things that get put out on the internet that people should really think about before they post.
DAwG is a Digital awareness Guide to staying safe on the internet. On April 11 to the 15 the Atlantic School District will be learning how to be safe and appropriate on the internet.
Why do we need a DAwG week? According to media specialist Ginger Bechtold, lately in our school District there has been a lot of kids especially younger kids being attacked on social media. The tech department has been noticing this and thought they needed to step up and do something about it.
Tech Department members Rodger Warren and Jessica Fincel alongside Stacey Sorensen, and teacher librarians Janice Dickerson and Bechtold have stepped up to try and make a difference in our community on the internet.
Starting the DAwG week off early, this week the internet classes have been creating logos to represent the DAwG idea. The best logo will be put on shirts and to promote activities for the week.
During DAwG week we will be having a seminar schedule for three days, the 11, 12, and the 13 of April. During the seminar time on the first day we will be watching videos of people being bullied on the internet. The second day we will be going to the auditorium for a video and a guest speaker. Then on the last day we will be playing games and having fun with a couple combined seminars.
Every seven minutes someone is being cyber bullied. According to the National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment website, bullied students tend to grow up more socially anxious, with less self-esteem and require more mental health services throughout life. More than 1 million kids were harassed, threatened, or some other form of cyber bullied on Facebook last year. Eighty-six percent of kids said that they were picked on or bullied at school.
After watching the video that will be shown on the first day, Bechtold said there is so much danger out there and especially in everything you post.
The winner of the DAwG logo contest will be announced on April 1. A website with additional information is linked to the Atlantic Schools webpage.
