A change in appearance

By Kelsey Hamilton and Liz Siggins

Does appearance really matter? From dying your hair to wearing contacts instead of glasses, there are many ways to change your appearance.

Sophomore Sara King she said, “Glasses are not attractive in my opinion. They look bad on me, but I like them on my lazy days.”  She also said when she dresses up she feels better about herself and more put together.  She said, “I feel like I have more self-confidence and it boosts my self esteem.”

We stopped a random freshman in the hall to ask her why she chooses to dye her hair. She said that she doesn’t like her original color, and usually goes darker than what she did the last time.  She said her hair looks better when she dyes it.

Junior Alexi Allen said she wears contacts because glasses are annoying and contacts are easier to deal with.  She said she feels more confident and cool when she wears contacts.  She said she sometimes wears them for appearance reasons, but other times it’s just easier.

When we talked to senior Caroline Trewet, she said she wears contacts because they are more convenient.  She highlighted her hair once because “it seemed like a fun thing to do.”

The school nurse, Kristi Simpson, shared her opinion on her tattoos. “My first one was a whim.  I just really wanted a tattoo so I got a butterfly on my ankle.” Her next tattoo was for her husband named Tye. She said that this tattoo means a lot to her since she has been with him for 26 years.

Math teacher Sheila Hayden said, “I don’t have a tattoo because they are too permanent, and I have a fear of commitment.” She thinks that glasses are way more comfortable than contacts and don’t wear her eyes out as much. “I think I look way different in my glasses than my contacts,” she said.  Appearance does not affect Hayden’s opinion of people as much as their actions.

Junior Becky Schuler wears glasses as part of her personal style.

Most of the people we talked to made deliberate choices about their own appearance, but when asked about others said, “Appearance doesn’t matter.”
