AHS students and drama kids said goodbye in many different forms to teacher and director Terrance Shuman after his last play production Nov. 2-3.
After hearing that Shuman had submitted his resignation for his teacher position on Oct. 12, 2012, students were already saying goodbye. Even though he resigned from his teaching job in October, Shuman decided to keep directing the fall play, “The Late Great Me.”
“Shuman helped me find my voice when before I would have been too shy to say anything,” said senior Shelby Cooper. Comments indicated that Shuman has given many students a chance to stand out.
Every night the play is performed the cast and crew join in “The Circle” right before the opening curtain. The Circle is a time to talk about how to make the play better and a time for Shuman to share a story or two. The Saturday night Circle is when the senior said their goodbyes. Saturday night’s Circle wasn’t just saying goodbye to the seniors, but also to Shuman.
Senior Caroline Trewet said she wanted to make the play special for Shuman. Scott Caslow said, “I felt really nervous because I wanted to make it a very good farewell to Shuman, and I was really happy with how it went.”
The students also decided to “hashtag” Shuman on Twitter. It was a way to get their thoughts out there to their friends and a way to support their director.
